Shipyard Hearing Loss

For many years Suzanne has helped shipyard workers obtain benefits when they have suffered permanent hearing loss due to their work environment. Shipbuilding is noisy work: grinding, chipping, pneumatic air guns, among other workplace noises can lead to permanent hearing loss. The Longshore and Harbor Worker’s Compensation Act, commonly referred to as the “Longshore Act” or “LHWCA” is a federal statute that provides medical benefits and compensation for longshore workers, harbor workers, and certain other employees engaged in maritime employment on the navigable waters of the United States and adjoining pier and dock areas.

Suzanne has successfully represented workers under the LHWCA to provide hearing impaired harbor workers with applicable medical treatment, including hearing aids paid by the employer for the rest of the harbor worker’s life. She is often able to secure a payment of benefits for the hearing loss in addition to lifetime medical benefits.
